If you were preparing for a test, would you rather have someone give you all of the answers, or would you rather learn the topics on which you were going to be tested?

My son Dylan is often asked by his teachers to help some of his classmates.  He told me that the teachers asked him because they knew he would teach them how to do something so that they could figure out the correct answers.  His fourth-grade teachers appreciated his efforts.  He’s nicknamed my Mini-Me, but I don’t deserve credit for that savvy.

Do you want all of the answers?

If you want me to cut to the chase and give you answers, then here goes:

  • 42
  • Steph Curry
  • All of the above
  • None of the above

What do you mean, those aren’t the right answers?  42 is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything according to Douglas Adams’s book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.  Steph Curry has won back-to-back NBA Player of the Year awards.  And haven’t we all taken multiple choice tests where All of the Above or None of the Above have been correct answers?

So what’s wrong with the answers I gave you?  Here’s one answer I can give you that is true and applicable.

What kind of answer is that?  It’s the answer to so many questions.

  • Will I have a new job?
  • Will I stay in my current job?
  • Will I start a new business?
  • Will I be happy?

The answer to all of these questions is it depends.  Leadership author John Maxwell identified 5 factors that lead to success.

  • Capacity – Got skills?

If I wanted to be a rocket scientist, well, there are a few complications.  Does taking Biology 101 in college mean I’m qualified to be a rocket scientist?  Please say no, I think that’s the safer answer.

  • Attitude – Think you can do it?

Who’s more likely to succeed – the Little Engine That Could or Eeyore?  The one who says I think I can or the one who sees the worst side of anything?  The little engine didn’t just wish he could climb that hill – he put in the effort to do it.  Eeyore is too busy seeing everything that could go wrong to put in the effort to make anything go right.

  • Passion – Are you driven?
  • Character – Do you follow through?
  • Teamwork – Do you play nice with others?
