Do you ever need a reset button?

The world has changed.  In the past, you’d get a job, work hard, and stay with the company until you retired at 65.

Not now.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) interviewed 10,000 people, and they interviewees have averaged 10 jobs so far.  The oldest person interviewed was 42.

So what does that mean for people 50 or older who want (or need) a new job?  Experts debate whether or not ageism exists in hiring.  Whether you believe in ageism or not, three key facts remain:

  • If you’re over 40, you’re in a legally protected class.  That means you can sue for age discrimination if you believe you were unfairly let go.  One way companies can reduce the risk of that happening?  Not hiring you.
  • First impressions are important during the interview process.  Older candidates may be perceived as weaker.
  • We’re in a fast-changing environment.  Technology has changed drastically over the past several decades and employers may question whether you’ve kept up with the trends.

People are living longer, which means they have to save more for retirement.  Government benefits are now starting after age 65.  These new rules mean that you may not be able to retire as early as you’d like.

You’ll be making life changes after 50 but those changes may be different from what you expected.  I’m not talking about another job search.  I’m talking about a Change Life Campaign.

Reinventing Your Life After 50

So you may be asking how to find a second career (or third, or eleventh, given the BLS statistics).  That question has lots of different answers, and one of those answers may be to start your own business.  You’ve been learning what you do want in a job, as well as what you don’t want.  You know what you’re good at and what you’re not.  And now, you can be your own boss if you want.  Whatever you decide, you’re the one in charge.  You’re making the rules.

Has the world left you behind?  Or has the world just given you an amazing opportunity to take control of your life?

Which question makes you want to say yes?

If you answered yes, you have an amazing opportunity – you’re in the right place.

And if you answered that the world has left you behind – give us a chance to get you caught up.  It’s easier than you think.
