Self Care

Love yourself first, and everything else falls in line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.

– Lucille Ball

Do you take care of yourself?

If we’re being honest, most of us would admit, “Not really.”  We’ve been taught not to be selfish, to put others first.

But we’re neglecting a basic truth – that we have to take care of ourselves to be able to have something to give others.  We can’t maintain relationships with other people if we don’t have a good relationship with ourselves.  We can’t take care of anyone else if we haven’t been eating, sleeping, or doing the other things necessary to sustain our own bodies.

As Mandy Hale said, It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and to make your happiness a priority. It’s necessary.

How do you look at life?

They agreed it would be a “snowmageddon.”  I’d watch the news and see different speculation on total accumulation, but all of them were great. Raleigh, NC would get the biggest snow it’s had in 6 years.  They predicted as much as 8-12 inches would fall overnight.

NOT us

The whole family stayed up late, playing games and waiting for the snow to fall.  We cheered when we saw the huge snowflakes.

Then we saw it quickly turn back to sleet.  I went to bed disappointed, feeling ripped off because my snow party wasn’t going to be a real snow party, since this was just another NC ice event.

Woke up in the morning to see some white stuff on the ground.  When I looked at our deck, I could still see the black grill cover, so I knew we had maybe an inch.  And sure enough, instead of the powdery stuff, it was a typically NC snow cone ice blend, lousy for snowball fights or snowmen.  Hmmpf.

Instead of seeing how pretty things were because of the little snow covering we did get, I felt robbed.

Instead of being excited that we got some snow – a rarity here – I felt gypped.

Instead of remembering how much fun our family Wii bowling tournament had been the night before (especially since I was on the winning team),   I was pouting.

That tells you a lot about how I look at life.  Definitely not in a way that contributes positively to my well-being.

Taking Care of Ourselves

We’ll look at how others take care of themselves for ideas.  We can share our successes and failures as we work on the most important relationship we have – the one with ourselves.
